Family: Chuviridae

Genus: Doliuvirus

Distinguishing features

Doliuviruses are primarily distinguished from viruses of other genera in the family based on nucleic acid sequence and organization differences (Di Paola et al., 2022). Members of the genus Doliuvirus have L protein sequences that are >31% identical to each other.

Genome organization and replication

Doliuviruses have bisegmented linear genomes of about 11.5 kb (S1: about 6.8 kb; S2: about 4.7 kb) with four ORFs encoding a glycoprotein (GP) , a large (L) protein with an RNA-directed RNA polymerase (RdRP) domain, and proteins of unknown function. The replication cycle of doliuviruses remains to be elucidated.

Biology

The only classified doliuvirus, Mos8Chu0 chuvirus (MoCV), has been associated with dipteran insects, specifically mosquitoes (culicid Culiseta minnesotae Barr, 1957), in the USA (unpublished). Unclassified doliuviruses have been associated with mosquitoes in Brazil.

Species demarcation criteria

New doliuvirus species should be established when the amino-acid identities of their complete L protein sequence are <90% compared to other viruses in the genus (Di Paola et al., 2022).
